Our company was founded in 1905 by Blanche P. Field to provide fine custom lamp shades for distinctive houses, hotels and resorts in Boston, MA and Newport, RI. For almost 100 years we have continued to focus on creating the highest quality, hand-crafted custom lamp shades available in America.

We have broadened our services to create distinctive custom lighting fixtures for restaurants, hotels and residences. We restore antique chandeliers and lamps, and convert vases, figurines and unusual objects into lamps. In our showrooms in Boston and New York we sell high-quality English, French and American chandeliers, lamps, wall sconces and lighting fixtures.

We are best known, however, for our exquisite silk, linen and paper lamp shades. We make shades in virtually any size and shape, in whatever style requested by our customers. Our range includes:
Silk and linen shades; pleated, shirred, stretched, pull-away or in combinations, with ruffles, smocking, rouching, herringbone or other trim styles. We have a huge inventory of cords, ribbons, picots and gros-grains to trim shades, including antique and unusual metallic and embroidered trims.
Paper shades with a proprietary finish resembling parchment, available in many colors and styles including roll-pleats, scored lines, or regular pleats. We can trim shades in rawhide lacing for a western feel.
Painted and lacquered paper shades, and plain white or kraft paper shades.
Basket-weave and cut-out paper shades in many variations.
Laminated linen and silk shades. We laminate over translucent fiberglass or over paper.

We are old fashioned in our approach to making shades; in that we still make our own shade frames by hand from heavy-gauge wire and steel band. After rustproofing, we wrap shade frames in muslin rather than just dipping them in liquid rubber, and we sew our shades with an inner lining and final lining in addition to the cover fabric. The shapes we make are almost endless -- Oriental bell, oblong scallop, square cut corner, Dartmouth oval, hex scallop, dome bell and so forth.

Since everything we make is custom, we have no standard price list or catalog. Generally, however, our small simple shades for chandeliers and sconces start at about $90 each, our paper shades for table and floor lamps range from $110 to $350 each, and our sewn shades range from $125 to more than $600 depending on size, shape and how elaborate the style.
